Day trip by boat to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier, with its blue ice and the old American base, Ikateq

The tour begins at the harbor in Tasiilaq.

We’ll sail to the beautiful Ammassalik Fjord, where we’ll see narrow, steep mountain peaks.

We’ll sail for about an hour before reaching these beautiful surroundings in the Ammassalik Fjord.

Our first stop is at Ikateq, where we’ll explore the remnants of World War II. It was here that the U.S. operated an airfield from 1942 to 1947 with the aim of establishing a transatlantic air route. You can still see the rusted fuel drums and old vehicles that were left behind.

We then sail further northeast and arrive at Sermiligaaq Fjord, which means “the beautiful glacier fjord” in Greenlandic. You’ll be amazed by the jagged mountain peaks and the breathtaking landscape.

We’ll also sail past the jagged glacier known as the Karale Glacier, and to the left, you’ll see the Knud Rasmussen Glacier right in front of us. The skipper will sail as close to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier as possible, and then we’ll go ashore to enjoy our lunch. There will be time to explore on your own, and then we’ll board the boat and sail back to Tasiilaq.
